    Zusammenfassung
    Despite ongoing efforts and interventions to promote balanced representation of women and men in political decision-making within the EU, and some progress over time, the overall situation remains one of imbalance, with key positions largely occupied by men. There is now gender balance in the European Parliament (i.e. Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) comprise at least 40 % of each gender), yet there are significant differences in the gender composition of MEPs from different Member States. The focus of the upcoming European elections, in June 2024, is thus on how to improve the gender balance among individual Member State delegations. The European Parliament drafted a legislative proposal to support a binding objective of gender equality for the upcoming elections and an obligation for political entities to ensure gender equality on candidate lists, but the Council has yet to endorse the proposal. The European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE) regularly monitors gender balance in political decision-making in the EU and its 27 Member States. This brief presents EIGE’s data on the representation of women and men in key political decision-making positions at the EU and national levels.

    The following scenarios are based mainly on Serious Incidents Reports received by the Frontex' Fundamental Rights Office, concerning violations that allegedly took place at border areas where the Agency is operating. All cases refer to situations where third country nationals are under the jurisdiction of the authorities of the host state participating in a joint activity. In 2022-23, the Fundamental Rights Office launched approximately 100 Serious Incident Reports related to fundamental rights,1 matching the scenarios outlined below. This indicates that they represent potential violations of a widespread nature.

These requirements also concern e-commerce businesses. The third release of ICS2 will already be live from 3 June 2024, when all EU Member States should be ready to accept ICS2 filings from all economic operators (first maritime and inland waterways, followed by rail and road).

    This publication was first conceived by the Laboratory Coordination Board at the Joint Research Centre’s Science Summit in June 2022. At this conference, discussions were held about the role of the JRC in the science of tomorrow and the strategic priorities to shape the future. A great deal of foresight was necessary. To include the view of the generations of tomorrow, this initiative was set up to gather the perspectives of children, who will benefit from the research results of the JRC. Children in their final year of primary school and their first year of secondary school in three European schools in two different countries were asked to draw the laboratories of the future. This catalogue of drawings aims at showing the imagination of children and how their ideas of the future can be a reminder when steering the strategy of JRC’s laboratories. Moreover, the publication highlights that the JRC with its laboratory capacities tackles issues that Europe will face in the future.

    The Versailles Declaration of 11 March 2022 committed the EU to take more responsibility for its security, to develop a more competitive and resilient economic base and to reduce its strategic dependencies in key sectors. Since then, the EU has adjusted its policies and accelerated implementation, while remaining committed to its long-term priorities. The EU continues to stand united with Ukraine for as long as it takes. Since the start of the war, the EU has adopted 11 sanctions packages and has mobilised a total of €81 billion in military, humanitarian, and financial assistance. To facilitate Ukrainian exports and contribute to global food security, the EU-Ukraine Solidarity Lanes have helped transport more than 53 million tonnes of Ukrainian agricultural products and close to 42 million tonnes of non-agricultural products.
