prometheus is a digital image archive for art and cultural studies with currently more than 3.8 million digital reproductions from 119 databases of museums, scientific institutions and research projects.
Research and museum databases with detailed object information are included, as are institute databases with image material for teaching.

In addition, prometheus is a portal for various learning elements that complement classroom teaching and promote self-study.

The image material comes from the fields of art and cultural history, archaeology and other image-based sciences. With prometheus, these images can be researched using a search mask, sorted into image collections and compiled into presentations for lectures. The multilingual search returns hits in German databases for English search terms and vice versa.

Databases with public domain images are offered in an Open Access area .

The project, which was formerly funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) with public money, does not generate any profits and is supported by a non-profit association for the purpose of promoting science and research through the development, provision and application of digital media in the field of art and cultural history.
